Sustainable living is a method of harmonizing human necessities with the environment in order to conserve the earth's natural resources for future generations. Modern technologies play a key role in sustainable living by creating clean methods of conserving resources, without disrupting one's livelihood.

Pyburn Mews is one of the first LEED for Homes certified developments in the Northshore, so what does this mean?

LEED for Homes is a rigorous rating system that ensures high-performance construction and design of homes that are exceptionally energy and cost efficient. The cost of living in a LEED home is less than that of living in a conventional home due to less energy use and water consumption.

LEED for Homes promotes a modern, sustainable way of living green while preserving the luxuries and conveniences of a conventional home. A green home uses less energy, water, and natural resources; creates less waste; and is ultimately healthier and more comfortable for its occupants. Additional benefits of living in a LEED certified home include lower energy and water bills, less exposure to mold, mildew and other toxins, and reduced greenhouse gas emissions.

Energy Star® is a program established by the EPA (environmental protection agency) that identifies eligible products as energy-efficient in order to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and conserve energy. Products that qualify for the Energy Star® label perform equally or better than non-certified products while using less energy, which ultimately saves consumers money on their energy bills. In 2007 alone, the program has saved consumers, businesses and organizations approximately $16 billion and has continued promoting innovative solutions to protecting the environment.

Energy Star® homes are at least 15% more energy efficient than homes built to the 2004 International Residential Code (IRC), and include additional energy-saving features that typically make them 20-30% more efficient than standard homes.

An Energy Star® home must include the following features:

      Effective Insulation

      High-Performance Windows

      Tight Construction and Ducts

      Efficient Heating and Cooling Equipment

      Efficient Products

      Third-Party Verification
